Shine as Lights in the World
Pastor Robert Zemke
During Advent, we celebrate the light that has arrived to shine in the darkness of our world. We are called to shine his light. This is the time of year to be kind, and ‘Tis the season of giving.’ Yet we know it is not just for this season. It says in Matthew:
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)
But how do we do it?
There are people that say (though I genuinely dislike this overused phrase) – "they light up a room." It may be due to their personality combined with a kind demeanor. We may not be one to light up a room, but we can shine the light we have. Is it just doing good deeds? Many do good deeds for various reasons, and there is no guarantee a light will shine as they do them. We are to do good works so that people give glory to God. When God's power, through the Holy Spirit, is at work in you, there is a light emanating from you because of the work of God (the same spirit that filled Christ fills you). He is the focus.
We shine when we respond differently to life’s challenges.
Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life. (Philippians 2:14-16)
As we hold onto the word of life, Christ, his light shines through us. We do not grumble or dispute but desire for God to be glorified. The unity of the body of Christ is a brighter light than all our lights combined. God is pleased and shines brightest in the unity of the body in Christ. It is a witness to the world.
I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one, I in them and you in me, so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. (John 17:22-23)
Let's shine his light to the world this Advent and every day of the new year.
