Revive Us Again!

Revive Us Again

Pastor Robert Zemke

Are we on the verge of a revival? In recent years, there has been growing talk of a resurgence in interest in Christianity, particularly among the younger generation (Gen Z). College campuses have witnessed revivals, such as the one that occurred several years ago at Asbury University. JP Pokluda, lead pastor of Harris Creek, has dedicated 20 years to sharing the gospel on college campuses. He has commented that he is “seeing a level of openness to Jesus unlike anything in his lifetime.” The recent assassination of Charlie Kirk led to Christ being proclaimed at his funeral as millions tuned in. Many people hope or believe that revival is either here or on the way. What is revival?

Revival is a state of spiritual awakening where believers are renewed in their faith in Christ after experiencing spiritual decline or indifference. It can happen at a personal level, within a local church, in a specific region, or even within an entire nation. Revival cannot be manufactured; it requires the Holy Spirit to awaken the church. This experience of God's presence leads to repentance, prayer, worship, and a desire to share the gospel. How can we differentiate between a manufactured revival and one of divine origin?

Jonathan Edwards outlined five characteristics of a work of God in his 1741 work, "The Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Spirit of God." These characteristics can be summarized as follows:

1. Acknowledgment that Jesus not only existed but also suffered, died, was raised to life, and is the anointed Savior.

2. When the Spirit actively works against the interests of Satan's kingdom, which promotes sin and worldly desires, indicating it is a true, not false spirit.

3. When the Spirit instills a greater respect for the Holy Scriptures, leading people to not only revere them but also to read and obey God's word.

4. When the Spirit prompts people to recognize that God is a great and sin-hating God; that life is brief and uncertain; and that there is another world where they must account for their actions, which reveals their sinful nature and helplessness.

5. When the Spirit encourages a spirit of love towards God and humanity among the people, it is a sure sign that it is the Spirit of God.

A revival leads to fundamental changes in the hearts and lives of individuals. In the recent revival at Asbury University, one clear aspect was the lack of emphasis on any human leader.

In a true revival, Jesus is exalted (1 John 4:2-3). The best way to discern true love that comes from genuine revival is through humility. The work of the spirit leads someone to cry out as in Psalm 85:6-7, "Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation."

Let’s pray for revival. God can work powerfully in and through us. It can happen if we humble ourselves and seek the Lord.
